Chemistry Consulting Group has been retained to search for an Operations Controller. This position will report to the Chief Financial Officer and will be responsible for leading the division administrative & accounting team for VIH Aviation Group, and continually driving system improvement and automation. This position will also be responsible for all accounting functions of VIHAG. These functions include maintaining an organization’s accounting principles, practices, and procedures. The position oversees the preparation and evaluation of financial operating reports and presents findings and recommendations. The Operations Controller will need extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals, perform a variety of tasks and lead and direct the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and altitude is expected.

 

The ideal candidate will be a Senior-level designated accountant, with experience working in the operational areas of a business. They will have strong leadership abilities and a sound understanding of how numbers drive the business and vice-versa. This is a customer facing, fast-paced role with high visibility across the business.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Provides leadership and work direction to the Operations Accounting team;
  • Improves performance and assures success by training, coaching, motivating, and evaluating employees;
  • Key member of leadership team providing support in the annual strategic planning and budgeting processes for the division including involvement in the preparation of the financial budget, identification of variances from budget to actual results, and mitigation plans;
  • Build systems and processes that deal with today’s reality while also laying a foundation to support exponential growth for operations in a variety of business lines;
  • Assist sales team with risk management and evaluation of customer Terms and Conditions;
  • Support leadership in identifying risks and developing strategic, tactical and operational initiatives.

Administration & Process Improvement

  • Lead the soft-close process and monthly project review process;
  • Own the billing and payables process and ensure collection of accounts receivable stays within agreed tolerances;
  • In conjunction with Treasury:
    • Manage the credit approval process
    • Manage and review collections and allowance for doubtful account process
  • Regularly offer process improvement ideas, shares best practices and facilitates standardization within the division;
  • Interact with IT group to ensure existing systems and proposed changes meet the needs of the Business Unit.

Accounting & Asset Management

  • Provide reporting, analysis, recommendations for continuous improvement and management support to Leadership, including monthly reporting, financial forecasts and utilization reporting;
  • Oversees division accounting functions including ensuring month-end accounting processes are followed and results comply with the company’s accounting policies;
  • Participates in governance calls on major projects;
  • Review of significant percentage competition major projects and revenue recognition;
  • Conducts analytical review of business unit performance and results to budget, for monthly management reporting, forecasting, accruals and actuals;
  • Review all weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting for accuracy and correctability;
  • Supervise partnership audits as required by stakeholders which includes intercompany elimination processes;  
  • Support Business units in preparing budget & forecasts;
  • Oversee and manage government contracts and continued maintenance of government contract compliance and reporting;
  • Assist in performing ad hoc analysis for internal reporting purposes;
  • Performs ongoing fleet analysis to ensure optimal capital allocation within the division;
  • Champions asset management within the division and manage fleet maintenance costs and inventory control;
  • Safeguards company assets by ensuring proper adherence to all administrative and operational processes, procedures and policies;
  • Provide feedback to effectively design preventative and detective controls to aid in the accuracy and timeliness of financial statements. Regularly offers process improvement ideas, shares best practices and facilitates standardization among divisions;
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Strong leadership skills;
  • Completion of a professional accounting designation;
  • 5+ years’ accounting experience, preferably within the operations/divisional level vs. corporate accounting;
  • Strong experience in revenue and cost accounting, as well as management reporting;
  • Computer literate including an understanding of accounting programs and Microsoft applications;
  • Experience in managing, leading and interacting with staff;
  • Advanced excel knowledge;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, capable of professional interaction with various levels of operations and other departments;
  • Works well under pressure with multiple concurrent deadlines;
  • Excellent analytical skills and takes initiatives to solve problems;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
